Limited Edition: Woodrow Phoenix, 'Up in Flames' (2021)

This limited edition print by Woodrow Phoenix from the Foundling Museum's 2021 exhibition 'Superheroes, Orphans & Origins – 125 years in comics'. The exhibition explored the representation of foundlings, orphans, adoptees, and foster children in comics, graphic novels and sequential art from around the globe.

This work by comic artist Woodrow Phoenix examines care identity and experience and was specifically commissioned for the exhibition.

"Almost all child heroes have backstories that begin with trauma; disastrous circumstances that end up with both parents dying and a child left all alone. In fiction - and in life - we measure heroism in a protagonist by the depth of difficulties they have to rise above. Up in Flames is a look at all those inciting incidents, distilled into one long disaster poem."

Woodrow Phoenix is a British comics artist, writer, editorial illustrator, graphic designer, font designer and author of children's books.
